The Sword of Destiny

IMG_9713

Actually, I didn't catch what this implement was called, or its significance. I've just been watching a lot of Arrested Development recently.

Last Friday I just happened to catch a blurb about this giant tuna carving demonstration in an email from The Reader about weekend events. It was pretty awesome, although rather crowded. I didn't have the greatest vantage points, but managed a few decent shots.

Below you can see the sword in use, through a bit of the plexiglass screens at the bottom. As the fish was carved up they shrink wrapped and handed out packages of it to the first hands to grab them. My friend Cecile and I split one, which we got back home on ice and sliced up with soy sauce and wasabi. It. Was. Heavenly.

I want to see the pictures of the creepy white suburbanites clutching their miniature human dolls!

Didn't get the best shot since I was trying to be discreet. But I got one I think I can use. Have to do some research first to find citation of this trend...

Samurai Fishmonger, as I said on Flickr.

That's a serious piece of cutlery. Um, why are the palms of his gloves tuna-red?

Their gloves had a grippy material on them that happened to be tuna/blood red.
